Do you need a rental car in Maui?

Absolutely not. If you pick the right place to stay, you can be in walking distance to stores, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and beaches. Instacart can bring you groceries, Uber Eats can bring you restaurant food. For day trips, you can take the Maui Bus to other locations away from your area. Ubers are readily available in all populated areas of the island.

On the other hand, you might want a rental car if you think you might enjoy driving the renowned Road to Hana, or you want to explore other rural and backcountry areas of Maui. Then consider whether you need the car for your entire stay, if it is just going to sit parked at the condo or hotel most of the time.

What if you feel you need constant distraction, and can never sit still, unless it's behind the wheel? Then do it, rent that car!

What kind of car should you rent in Maui?

Rent whatever you are comfortable driving. Rent a car that you are familiar with - the chance of any incident is much lower if you do. Make sure it can fit you, your travel companions, and your luggage - and that you can get in and out of comfortably if you have a bad knee, bad back, or bad hip.

The roads in Maui are normal paved roads, so you do not need any special kind of car to get around. Unless you are staying in a remote AirBnB served by a privately maintained (read un-maintained) dirt or gravel road, with ruts deep enough to swallow an entire Toyota Corolla, you do not need a Jeep or a truck. Inquire about access with your local host or property manager.

Are rental car break-ins a problem in Maui?

Break-ins and theft from rental cars (or any other cars) do occur in Paradise, just like they do anywhere else in the world.

You might think that these incidents are more likely to occur at remote roadside pull-outs or trail-heads, but in fact, if you consult the Lexis Nexis Community Crime map for Maui, and filter for vehicle break-ins, you find that most of those reported were in the more densely populated areas of the island.

Break-ins can happen even in hotel and condo parking areas that seem safe and secure. Never leave your wallet, purse, or phone in the car. Pack a list of numbers to call to get assistance should you need it.

Oh and never leave your car unlocked with the keys in it.

What documents are needed to rent a car in Maui?

You need physical (not electronic) versions of a valid driver license and credit card or debit card.

For payment by debit card, an additional hold on funds may be required.

With a driver license from outside the US or Canada, a passport is required.

Usually the name on the credit card and the driver license or passport must match.

How old do you have to be to rent a car in Maui?

For nearly all rentals, the minimum age is 20. Some rental companies do charge additional fees for renters under 25 - these fees vary.

Check our Maui car rental booking site for rentals with an added young driver fee of just $8/day (on top of the regular rental cost) for drivers 20-25. Call us at 808-280-1196 if you need help figuring out the options.

Drivers aged 18 and 19: You are basically out of luck - we do not know of any legitimate options for you.

Can you just waltz up to the counter and rent a car?

Yes, you can, but it might cost you. Counter staff are unscrupulous about charging you the maximum rate, even if discounts are available, because they think they have you in between a rock and a hard place - and their incentives and commission depend on it.

If you have a smartphone, and want to save some money, book your rental car with an Online Travel Agent (OTA) site like ours right before walking into the rental office. It will save you a bundle, or even, it might get you availability when the counter may otherwise tell you that there is none.

Or call us at 808-280-1196, and we'll handle it for you.

Do you have to buy insurance when you rent a car in Maui?

If you own a car anywhere in the US or Canada, in general you are covered by your own insurance when you rent a car in Hawaii, with the same coverages you have on your own insurance policy.

In general your car's insurance coverage applies for a rental of up to 30 days. For any details of your coverage, enquire with your insurance company.

Whether or not you have any coverage, you are not required to purchase any insurance offered by the rental company. If the rental company tries to force you to purchase insurance coverage, or charges you without your authorization, report them to the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection.

Be aware that if you sign and approve a rental contract that includes insurance charges, you are responsible to pay those charges, whether you wanted them or not. So bring your reading glasses, and read carefully before you sign.

What car rental companies are available at the Maui airport?

Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty are on-site within the Consolidated Rent A Car (ConRAC) facility at the airport. These are all available to book from our online booking portal.

Fox/Allsave and Nu have off-airport locations served by shuttle from the airport.

All the above are companies listed in the Online Travel Agent (OTA) systems. But Maui also has a thriving cottage industry of homegrown car rental companies not listed with OTA's, with fleets ranging in size from barely more than a handful of cars all the way to a few hundred cars. To find these, just run a Google search or ask ChatGPT (or Gemini) for "local Maui car rental."

For even more local color, and if you yourself are too colorful for a more or less conventional rental, check what's offered on Craigslist, Facebook, or TikTok. Buyer beware.

What if my confirmed reservation is canceled when I arrive?

If you have made an advance reservation, and the rental company cannot honor it because there are no cars available, report it to the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection. Under Hawaii law, a confirmed car rental reservation is a binding contract, and failing to provide the promised vehicle can be investigated as an unfair or deceptive business practice.

If your reservation is canceled without notice, you are entitled to a full refund of any deposits or payments you made, and reimbursement for the price difference of the emergency replacement vehicle, and coverage of unexpected transit costs.

In general, the rental company will make efforts to accommodate you - if you insist on it. Ask that they provide you with the next available vehicle, and that they pay your transportation costs until you can take delivery.

What time of year are Maui car rental prices the lowest?

We might not be able to tell you exactly when they are the lowest, but we can tell you with some confidence when they are likely to be the highest. These seasonal patterns repeat year to year like clock-work.

Christmas and New Year's (the peak)
Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday (mid-January)
Presidents' Day (mid-February)
Spring Break (mid-March)
Easter Holiday (late March/April)
Summer Vacation (mid-June to mid-July)
Columbus Day (mid-October)
Veterans' Day (mid-November)
Thanksgiving (late November)

The so-called "Shoulder Seasons" when prices are lowest are from Easter through Memorial Day, and August to September.

Is it cheaper to rent a car at the Maui airport, or off-airport?

Um. Yes. No. Sometimes. Maybe. There is no longer any hard and fast rule for this. It is not unusual that the so-called cheap off-airport rates are actually more than the rates at the airport. Don't let yourself be roped in by all the "Cheapest" providers. After all, they cannot ALL be THE cheapest.

Out of the 10 Maui car rental companies that claim to have the cheapest prices, 9 of them are either mistaken in their claim, or lying.

Note that the conventional premium for airport rentals - based on hefty airport taxes and concession fees - has all but evaporated. Thanks to their economies of scale, the airport concessionaires are in a position to charge lower rates than anyone else - and sometimes they do, but only when they feel like it. The rest of the time they will squeeze you mercilessly to get every last nickel and dime out of you.

IN SUMMARY: Rental car prices in Maui are very volatile. Shop around.

Do Maui car rental prices go down closer to the date?

Maui car rental prices flip regularly between lower rates in advance, and lower rates at the last minute.

The alternation has become more unpredictable in recent years, with the advent of AI machine learning systems that constantly reset prices in order to extract maximum value out of the rental fleets.

If you just "set it and forget it" weeks or months in advance, it is likely that you will be overpaying. You are advised to book a non-prepaid (like the no-deposit, no-prepay, no cancellation rates we offer) as soon as you start making plans for your trip, then check prices weekly from then on until the days just before your travel date. There is a significant potential for savings if you do so.

Check the price tracker on our blog for when advance rates are likely to be higher or lower than last minute rates.

Why are Maui car rentals so expensive?

There is an continuing succession of factors that have pushed Maui car rental prices upward drastically in the last few years:

2021-2022: Severe rental car shortage following the Covid-19 pandemic. Prices exploded.
2024: World-wide shipping bottlenecks delayed arrival of rental cars when they were most needed, in advance of the busy travel season. Prices exploded -again.
2025: Back-to-back safety recalls idled thousands of rental vehicles, reducing available supply. Prices exploded - yet again.
2026: Demise of low-cost competitors meant machine-learning price-setting algorithms felt free to hold prices at higher levels - and prices went KA-BOOM, consistently about double since the beginning of the year from what they were a year earlier.

What does the future hold? Keep up with it on our blog.
