Maui Car Rental Taxes And Fees

The payable taxes and fees are included in every price that we give you. "Included" means that we give you the total of the base rental cost plus the required taxes and fees, with nothing added later. There are no surprise "hidden fees." Only the Rental Vehicle Tax (aka Daily Road Tax) and the General Excise Tax (aka sales tax) are mandatory. The others are discretionary fees that are assessed by the rental companies.

  • Calculated amount of taxes and fees varies slightly by company. Some companies apply sales tax to the concession fee, facilities fee, or licensing fee, and others do not. The difference in total amount is small.

Notes On Maui Car Rental Taxes And Fees:

  • Daily road tax and sales tax are mandatory for all rentals. These amounts must be collected and remitted to the State Department of Taxation, under penalty of law, either quarterly or monthly if a minimum is exceeded, by any person or company operating a vehicle rental. The only exemption is for rentals to local residents whose vehicle is under repair at a licensed mechanic shop.
  • Concession fee, facilities fee, and registration fee are discretionary fees that are uniformly charged by companies operating at the airport Consolidated Rent A Car (ConRAC) facility, for the purpose of operating cost recovery.
  • Other discretionary fees charged by some off-airport operators include "Parking Exit Fee," or "Airport Delivery Fee" (amount varies), that are not really fees at all. They are just ways to milk you.
  • So-called "hidden fees" are optional items like re-fueling, roadside assistance, additional insurance (supplemental liability insurance SLI and loss damage waiver LDW), and other costs that you can opt in or out of at the time of rental.
  • It is your responsibility to review your statement of charges and make sure it is as you wish BEFORE you approve the charges.
  • Hidden fees are usually there in plain sight, right in front of your nose.

This is a top-level overview of things people like to know about renting a car in Maui. For more detailed questions, with more specifics, refer to our Maui Car Rental Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) section. On mobile, swipe right and left to scroll through the cards below.

Do you need a rental car in Maui?

Absolutely not. If you pick the right place to stay, you can be in walking distance to stores, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and beaches. Instacart can bring you groceries, Uber Eats can bring you restaurant food. For day trips, you can take the bus to other locations away from your area. Ubers are readily available in all populated areas of the island.

Our customers are always telling us that they barely used the car, that they only really needed it for getting to and from the airport, and that it sat parked most of the time.

On the other hand, you might want a rental car if you want to explore and discover far-flung rural and backcountry areas of Maui. Then consider whether you need the car for your entire stay, or just for the days you go touring. We do have cars that you can pick up right at your resort location just for the days you need it.

And what if you want to have a car there, just in case you need it? Our discount rates make it an affordable option.

Smart Guide: Check out all our available pick-up and return locations..

What kind of car should you rent in Maui?

Rent whatever you are comfortable driving. Rent a car that you are familiar with - the chance of any incident is much lower if you do. Make sure it can fit you, your travel companions, and your luggage - and that you can get in and out of comfortably if you have a bad knee, bad back, or bad hip.

The roads in Maui are normal paved roads, so you do not need any special kind of car to get around. Unless you are staying in a remote AirBnB served by a privately maintained (read un-maintained) dirt or gravel road, with ruts deep enough to swallow an entire Toyota Corolla, you do not need a Jeep or a truck. Inquire about access with your local host or property manager.

Smart Touring Tip: Read about no-go areas for Maui rental cars.

Are rental car break-ins a problem in Maui?

Break-ins and theft from rental cars (or any other cars) do occur in Paradise, just like they do anywhere else in the world.

You might think that these incidents are more likely to occur at remote roadside pull-outs or trail-heads, but in fact, if you consult the Lexis Nexis Community Crime map for Maui, and filter for vehicle break-ins, you find that most of those reported were in the more densely populated areas of the island.

Break-ins can happen even in hotel and condo parking areas that seem safe and secure. Never leave your wallet, purse, or phone in the car. Pack a list of numbers to call to get assistance should you need it.

Smart Safety Tip: Never leave your car unlocked with the keys in it.

What documents are needed to rent a car in Maui?

You need physical (not electronic) versions of a valid driver license and credit card or debit card.

For payment by debit card, an additional hold on funds may be required.

With a driver license from outside the US or Canada, a passport is required.

Usually the name on the credit card and the driver license or passport must match.

Smart International Traveler Hack: Read about our special deals - with insurance - for international visitors..

How old do you have to be to rent a car in Maui?

For nearly all rentals, the minimum age is 20. Some rental companies do charge additional fees for renters under 25. These fees vary, they can be $25/day or more.

Drivers 20-24, it can get confusing, but we can help you navigate the options and restrictions, just call us at 808-280-1196 if you need help figuring things out.

Drivers aged 18 and 19: You are basically out of luck - we do not know of any legitimate options for you.

Smart Young Driver Hack: Check our special deals for drivers under 25, for a discounted fee of just $8/day (on top of the regular rental cost).

Can you just waltz up to the counter and rent a car?

Yes, you can, but it might cost you. Counter staff are unscrupulous about charging you the maximum rate, even if discounts are available, because they think they have you in between a rock and a hard place - and their incentives and commission depend on it.

Smart Last-Minute Hack: If you have a smartphone, and want to save some money, book your rental car with an Online Travel Agent (OTA) site like ours right before walking into the rental office. It will save you a bundle, or even, it might get you availability when the counter may otherwise tell you that there is none.

Or call us at 808-280-1196, and we'll handle it for you.

Do you have to buy insurance when you rent a car in Maui?

If you own a car anywhere in the US or Canada, in general you are covered by your own insurance when you rent a car in Hawaii, with the same coverages you have on your own insurance policy.

In general your car's insurance coverage applies for a rental of up to 30 days. For any details of your coverage, enquire with your insurance company.

Whether or not you have any coverage, you are not required to purchase any insurance offered by the rental company. If the rental company tries to force you to purchase insurance coverage, or charges you without your authorization, report them to the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection.

Be aware that if you sign and approve a rental contract that includes insurance charges, you are responsible to pay those charges, whether you wanted them or not. So bring your reading glasses, and read carefully before you sign.

What car rental companies are available at the Maui airport?

Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty are on-site within the Consolidated Rent A Car (ConRAC) facility at the airport. These are all available to book from our online booking portal.

Fox/Allsave and Nu have off-airport locations served by shuttle from the airport.

All the above are companies listed in the Online Travel Agent (OTA) systems. But Maui also has a thriving cottage industry of homegrown car rental companies not listed with OTA's, with fleets ranging in size from barely more than a handful of cars all the way to a few hundred cars. To find these, just run a Google search or ask ChatGPT (or Gemini) for "local Maui car rental."

For even more local color, and if you yourself are too colorful for a more or less conventional rental, check what's offered on Craigslist, Facebook, or TikTok. Buyer beware.

What if my confirmed reservation is canceled when I arrive?

If you have made an advance reservation, and the rental company cannot honor it because there are no cars available, report it to the Hawaii Office of Consumer Protection. Under Hawaii law, a confirmed car rental reservation is a binding contract, and failing to provide the promised vehicle can be investigated as an unfair or deceptive business practice.

If your reservation is canceled without notice, you are entitled to a full refund of any deposits or payments you made, and reimbursement for the price difference of the emergency replacement vehicle, and coverage of unexpected transit costs.

In general, the rental company will make efforts to accommodate you - if you insist on it. Ask that they provide you with the next available vehicle, and that they pay your transportation costs until you can take delivery.

How to get the best price on a Maui car rental

These are tried and true strategies for getting the best price on a rental.

  • Rates can change daily, up or down. AI is constantly checking and resetting prices.
  • Rates are seasonal. On average, they follow a regular pattern throughout the year.
  • The cheapest rates are in the spring and fall shoulder seasons.
  • The highest rates are for Christmas/New Year's, mid-February, and July.
  • In low season, rates tend to drop in the days immediately before the date. You can save up to 50%.
  • In high season, rates ratchet up as you get closer to the date. They can double or triple.
  • If you book too far in advance (i.e. 1 year to 6 months) it is likely you will overpay.
  • Book a refundable/free cancellation rate, and check rates again regularly up to the date of rental. Rentals with no-prepay usually cost a little bit more than prepaid rentals, but they give you the flexibility to save big if prices come down.
  • Compare prices across different platforms. There are occasionally big differences between different booking sites.
  • Check off-airport rental locations. Sometimes - not always - it can be worth the Uber/Taxi fee to get there.
  • Consider renting a car for only the days you really need it.
  • Call and ask one of our booking agents for advice on the best deals.
  • Decline optional insurance charges (if you have your own).
  • Decline optional re-fueling charges (and don't forget to fill up).
  • Decline roadside assistance (if you have AAA or equivalent).
  • Check periodically for special promotional rates.
  • Get prices for your trip.
  • Call us at  808-280-1196  for an instant quote.
  • Check our blog for the latest price trends & info.
