CAR RENTAL LOCATIONS FOR MAUI KAHULUI AIRPORT (OGG)

These are the options for renting a car at the airport:

3. Book one of our local rental cars, either with delivery to the airport public parking, or with curbside pickup at the baggage claim terminal for our VIP customers.

HOW DO YOU BOOK A CAR RENTAL AT MAUI KAHULUI AIRPORT (OGG)?

CAN YOU RENT A CAR WITHOUT MAKING A RESERVATION FIRST?

It's possible to rent a car as a walk-in, without an advance reservation, but this is not recommended, for the following reasons: 

1. During peak travel periods (holidays, winter months, summer vacation months) there may be no cars available for walk-ins. 

2. The price you pay for a walk-in rental can be substantially higher than the price with a reservation made in advance.

For these reasons it is suggested that you book in advance.  

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD YOU BOOK YOUR RESERVATION?

Conventional wisdom is the further in advance that you book, the more you save. The reality is more complicated.

1. For peak travel periods and holidays, book in advance. These include X-mas/New Year's, Mid-winter (mid-February to Spring Break), Easter, Independence Day and Mid-summer (mid-June to early August), Columbus Day, Veterans' Day, and Thanksgiving. For these dates, advance reservation rates are lower, and last-minute rates are higher. We did not mention Memorial Day, or Labor Day, because usually there is no bump for these dates. 

2. For Off-Peak and Shoulder Seasons, book last-minute. This includes any period not mentioned above, which comes to about 80% of the days of the year. For these dates, consistently, the last-minute rate is the cheapest rate. 

The seasonality of rental rates is very repeatable year-to-year, barring unforeseen events, like rental vehicle recalls, or logistical delays on fleet vehicle deliveries, or fires, storms, floods, and other acts of God, that can disrupt seasonal patterns. 

HOW DO YOU PICK UP YOUR RENTAL CAR AT MAUI KAHULUI AIRPORT?

The ConRAC facility (rentacar center) is a huge multi-level parking structure only about two hundred yards from the airport terminal. It is where the rental companies have their customer service desks and their garages. It is served by a free tram from the terminal. 

If you are arriving on a flight to OGG:
Follow the signs from the baggage claim terminal. You board the tram right in front of baggage claim. Alternatively, you if you don't feel like waiting for the tram and squeezing into a crowded tramcar, and you do not have any limitations on your mobility or endurance, you can walk from the terminal to the rentacar center - five-minute walk.

If you are already in Maui:
Drive to the airport and follow the signs for "Rental Car Return." Drive into the parking structure. There is no public parking inside the rental car center, but you can be dropped off by your ride or taxi inside the parking structure, then walk or take the elevator to the customer service desks in the front of the building on the upper level. Even if you already have a reservation, you do have to go to the customer service desks first to check in before picking up a car from the parking garage. Alternatively, when approaching the airport, instead of following the signs for "Rental Car Return," follow the signs for "Public Parking." This takes you to the main parking area for the airport. It is paid parking that costs a few dollars per hour. Park and either walk up the long ramp from the parking lot to the rentacar center, or board the tram at the parking lot. 

WHAT TYPES OF CARS ARE AVAILABLE?

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT A CAR?

1. Rates for New Cars
Rates for Maui car rental are seasonal, meaning they vary by the time of year, and of course they vary depending on the type of vehicle being rented. To give you an idea, this is the median of the lowest available price for every vehicle type for a one-week rental from Kahului Airport (OGG) over the 52 weeks from Nov. 5, 2024 to Nov. 4, 2025, booked one day in advance.

These include all taxes and fees, but no optional charges like insurance. The actual price can vary significantly week-to-week and sometimes day-to-day (from about 40% of median price to 3-5x median price). 

These rates are for illustration only, and not guarantees of pricing and availability. Same-day rentals can benefit from last-minute discounts that car rental companies offer on their excess inventory in the off-season. On the other hand, if the date falls within a high season or holiday period, the rate can climb up significantly - if there is any availability at all. When it comes to renting a car in Maui, the rate you pay is a crap-shoot, like rolling the dice.

2. Rates For Local Cars
Rates for our local cars are usually much lower and much less volatile than rates for new cars. They are ideal if your intended use of the car is more utilitarian (trips to the grocery store and the beach for example) and less oriented to touring and exploration (i.e. seeing all the sights). Our local cars are older used models in good running condition. These are typical rates: 

Long term: $800/month,
Economy cars: $30/day,
Midsize cars: $35/day
Small SUV: $35/day
Regular SUV: $40/day
Deluxe SUV: $45/day
Minivan: $50/day.

Note prices can vary, availability is limited, and restrictions may apply. 

If you're ok with driving an older car that's reliable and well-maintained, then this may be a good option for you. 

ARE THERE OTHER LOCATIONS FOR RENTING A CAR, IN MAUI, BESIDES THE AIRPORT?

Most major rental companies have satellite off-airport locations in the resort towns, Wailea and Kihei on the South Side, and Ka'anapali and Lahaina on the West Side, as well as the island commercial center, Kahului. CAN YOU RENT A CAR IN A MAUI RESORT TOWN AND RETURN IT TO THE AIRPORT (OR VICE VERSA)? 

This option is available for most rentals at Maui resort town off-airport locations, however, there is usually a very hefty additional cost when you return the car to another location.
