July 12, 2026. This week, we expected prices to move down, continuing a descent from the July 4 peak. Instead, prices bounced back up in most categories. But, peering into the advance booking crystal ball, we see sharp drops coming soon in many of the most volatile categories, including minivans, Jeeps, and convertibles, that will bring them down from their summer peak levels where they are now down to more moderate levels. And, in a project milestone, we mark three full years of data collection for our most affordable price at Kahului Airport series. Keep reading for all the details.

In this advance exploration, we have focused on the more volatile vehicle categories that have been subject to limited availability and high prices over the last few weeks.
After weeks of being sold out, minivans become available again for one-week rental from OGG at an unbelievable low price of $445/week. Looking a month ahead the price bounces up the settles back down to $510/week. At last availability, in early June, minivans were more than $1,000/week before they sold out entirely for next-day rentals.
Jeeps drop to just $477/.week in a week from now, then also make a dead cat bounce up before settling back down to $582 in a month from now. Compare to the current price of more than $1,000/week.
Large (7-seat) SUVs drop to $561/week on Jul. 20 and do not change much from that level for the next month. This is a 50% drop from this weeks $1,200/week.
Convertibles also drop, to just $471/week, but not until two weeks from now, and continue to show some volatility before settling down to just $546/week in about a month. this also represents about a 50% drop from this week's best price.
Even before making these price checks, we did expect - as we wrote last week - for prices to come down from their summer holiday peak into a lower range for the rest of the summer. But the suddenness and size of some these drops is surprising all the same. However is it really anything to be surprised about? Looking back on the the one-year price chart, we do see that prices in many vehicle categories also took a sharp drop at the end of the summer busy season last year - just as we are forecasting for this year. The drop in advance prices we are expecting now seems to parallel the sharp drop in prices from a year ago. So it's possible that as sharp and as sudden as it is, the coming price drop is a normal seasonal adjustment. Travelers can only hope that this price adjustment will be realized smoothly and without any surprises.
Figure 3. Three full years of the lowest available price of a one-week rental at Kahului Airport (OGG), for airport (ConRAC) and off-airport locations.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
We have just completed three full years of weekly monitoring of the lowest available price for a one-week rental at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), compiling prices for vehicles available at the Consolidated Rent A Car facility (ConRAC) as well as rentals from off-airport locations served by free shuttle. This survey covers 10 different companies, Ace (closed as of March 2026), Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Nu, Payless, Sixt, and Thrifty.
This price survey covering three years from July 2023 to this July is illustrated in Figure 3. This chart marks an important milestone in our multi-year price-tracking effort. We will return to it in future editions of this blog to discuss salient features like the significant rise in the price floor in 2026 compared to 2025 (clearly visible on the chart), and the disintegration of the off-airport market - also clearly visible.
Beginning in July 2024, we expanded our data collection from just the lowest price available to the lowest prices in seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Later this month we will have completed two full years of this data set - which will again give us plenty of salient findings to dive into, deeply.
Figure 4. Week-by-week variation of Maui car rental prices averaged over five years, from 2013 to 2018.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 4, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui? "
