Maui Car Rental: Booking & Price Checks

The payable taxes and fees are included in every price that we give you. "Included" means that we give you the total of the base rental cost plus the required taxes and fees, with nothing added later. There are no surprise "hidden fees." Only the Rental Vehicle Tax (aka Daily Road Tax) and the General Excise Tax (aka sales tax) are mandatory. The others are discretionary fees that are assessed by the rental companies.

• Licensing fee is a discretionary fee based on Gross Vehicle Weight or Vehicle Class. It varies from $0.79/day to $2.99/day depending on the company and the vehicle.
• Calculated amount of taxes and fees varies slightly by company. Some companies apply sales tax to the concession fee, facilities fee, or licensing fee, and others do not. The difference in total amount is small.
• Daily road tax is scheduled to increase by $0.50/day on Jan. 1, 2027.

Notes On Maui Car Rental Taxes And Fees:

• Daily road tax and sales tax are mandatory for all rentals. These amounts must be collected and remitted to the State Department of Taxation, under penalty of law, either quarterly or monthly if a minimum is exceeded, by any person or company operating a vehicle rental. The only exemption is for rentals to local residents whose vehicle is under repair at a licensed mechanic shop.
  
• Concession fee, facilities fee, and registration fee are discretionary fees that are uniformly charged by companies operating at the airport Consolidated Rent A Car (ConRAC) facility, for the purpose of operating cost recovery.
• Other discretionary fees charged by some off-airport operators include "Parking Exit Fee," or "Airport Delivery Fee" (amount varies), that are not really fees at all. They are just ways to milk you.
• So-called "hidden fees" are optional items like re-fueling, roadside assistance, additional insurance (supplemental liability insurance SLI and loss damage waiver LDW), and other costs that you can opt in or out of at the time of rental.
• It is your responsibility to review your statement of charges and make sure it is as you wish BEFORE you approve the charges.
• Hidden fees are usually there in plain sight, right in front of your nose.
