June 7, 2026. This week, movement in Maui car rental prices seems to be driven primarily by pressure from safety recalls that idle fleet vehicles. The price of compact cars, Jeeps, and convertibles are down by small percentages. But prices for mid-size cars, SUV's, and minivans, all three categories directly or indirectly seeing lasting pressure caused by safety recalls, are up. Stay with us as we do the numbers...

For each vehicle category, this is how the lowest price for a one week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) starting on Monday June 8, 2026 has changed from the week before:
Category This week Last Change
Economy $347 $351 -1%
Midsize $641 $394 +63%
Jeep $775 $923 -16%
Convertbl $477 $523 -9%
SUV $609 $481 +27%
7 st SUV $1,558 $1,004 +55%
Minivan $1,047 $860 +22%
This week's lowest prices for rental cars from Kahului Airport (OGG) were mixed, with some categories up, and others down compared to last week. Economy/compact cars were down 1%, Jeeps were down 16%, and convertibles were down 9%. But mid-size cars were up 63%, standard SUV's were up 27%, large (7-seat) SUV's were up 55%, and mini-vans were up 22%.
Our analysis: categories that are not affected by recent recalls have not moved much in the last week. Compact cars and convertibles are both down by small percentages. Jeeps seem to be recovering from last November's safety recall, and they are down 16%. But mid-size cars and large SUV's are affected by more recent safety recalls called this spring. Chevy Malibu's, that constitute a large portion of the mid-size car category, were recalled, and we have started to see accumulations of these vehicles sitting idle in the airport base yards. Same for Ford Expedition SUV's, an important component of the large SUV category, also visibly being idled. For these vehicles, slowly increasing demand pressure is pushing prices upward on their entire category. And the price pressure on large SUV's is extending to mini-vans, that substitute as a multi-passenger people mover.
Prices for this week and last week, with the percentage change week-to-week, are illustrated in Figure 2.
For months now, erratic, unpredictable price movements week-to-week have been the norm when it comes to the cost of a rental car in Maui. We have tracked price movements in this market steadily for several years - and we never cease to be amazed by all that is counter-intuitive, unexpected, and, well, just plain wrong with the way that prices unfurl over the course of the year. Gone from the market are the predictable measured seasonal movements of years gone by. Now it's violent roller-coaster swings from week to week, peaks and valleys succeeding each other repeatedly with no let-up. It's enough to bring what some experts in other markets call "the puke point." As an analyst, there is a feeling of being sick to the stomach, and not wanting to continue any further. But we soldier on.
This week brings more of the same. Hundreds - maybe thousands - of rental vehicles are sitting idle in the airport base yards. We have seen these vehicles with our own eyes. Even so, some visitors arriving with confirmed reservations in hand were being told last week that there were no vehicles available. How do the rental companies continue to get away with massive mis-pricing and broken promises to consumers? They get away with it because nobody absolutely nobody else but us takes the same systematic comprehensive analytic view that we take here. Nobody shares and compares info. Nobody takes the time to go check facts on the ground. Consumers are in the dark, and other than their whining and pining on social media and the occasional inconsequential one-star review that they award on some crooked review site, there is no accountability for the perpetrators of this preposterous scam.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Figure 4. Week-by-week variation of Maui car rental prices averaged over five years, from 2013 to 2018.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 6, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration.
