July 5, 2026. This week, prices for many Maui car rental vehicle categories are down from last week. This is a welcome change for travelers, coming after several weeks in a row of back-to-back increases. It is entirely possible that with the Independence Day holiday past, the usual seasonal summer price peak for Maui rental car prices is also past. But availability issues continue to affect specific categories. Prices for Jeeps shot up this week, and minivans remain sold out entirely for next-day rentals. Both these categories are still working through the effects of safety recalls that have curtailed availability and drove up prices in the last year. The expectation is for prices overall to normalize over the coming weeks - but if there is anything we know about the Maui car rental market, it is to always expect the unexpected when it comes to prices and availability. HOW MUCH IS THE CHEAPEST MAUI RENTAL CAR ON JULY 6, 2026?

Every week, we list the lowest available prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week beginning Monday, July, 2026.

The prices quoted here include all applicable taxes and fees. Prices for these vehicle types charted week-to-week for the last 14 months are illustrated in Figure 1.

These are the lowest prices in every car category: The lowest price for a compact car from Kahului Airport (OGG) this week is with SiXT, at $341/week. Mid-size cars are starting at $606/week, at Sixt. Jeeps are starting at $1,439/week, from Avis. The lowest price for a convertible is $724/week, at Payless. The cheapest standard SUV's are $369/week, at Sixt. Large (7-seat) SUV's start at $943/week, from Thrifty. And minivans are completely sold out island-wide with none available from any company serving the airport or any off-airport locations listed in the Online Travel Agent (OTA) systems. .

HOW MUCH DID MAUI RENTAL CAR PRICES CHANGE FROM LAST WEEK?

For each vehicle category, this is how the lowest price for a one week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) starting on Monday June 29, 2026 has changed from the week before:

This week's prices for rental cars from Kahului Airport (OGG) were mostly down compared to last week. It's entirely likely that overall prices have passed their peak for the summer season. The most affordable price for a compact/economy car was down 42% from last week. Mid-size cars were down 18%. Standard SUV's were down 68%, and large 7-seat SUV's were down 45%. But convertibles were unchanged, while Jeeps shot up 63%. Minivans remained entirely sold out island-wide.

WHY ARE DIFFERENT CATEGORIES AFFECTED DIFFERENTLY BY SAFETY RECALLS?

Minivans and Jeeps are the categories most impacted by the past year's safety recalls, that, by law, idle rental vehicles until repairs are completed. These two categories are each constituted almost exclusively of a single vehicle: Chrysler Pacifica for the minivans, and Jeep Wrangler Hybrid for the Jeeps. When these vehicles were hit with recalls, it was the entire category that was taken down, with no alternatives within the same category. SUV's and midsize cars were also hit with recalls, for Ford Expedition and Chevy Malibu, respectively. But in these vehicle categories, the recalls have had less of an effect on availability and pricing than they did with the minivans and Jeeps. The reason is there is a more diversified vehicle mix in the SUV and mid-size car categories. For these vehicles, the rental fleets do not rely on a single vehicle to constitute an entire category.. The fleet vehicle mix includes alternatives in the same vehicle category, like the Chevy Blazer, Chevy Equinox, Chevy Tahoe for SUV's in the same category as the recalled Ford Edge and Ford Expedition, or, for mid-size, NIssan Altima and Toyota Camry, among others, in the same categoroy as the recalled Chevy Malibu. So when a safety recall idles a certain vehicle in the SUV or midsize car, other options remain available, and the effect on pricing and availability is not as extreme.

Prices for this week and last week, with the percentage change week-to-week, are illustrated in Figure 2.

HOW DO WE GET OUR MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICE DATA?

Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.

Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
