June 22, 2025 - This week, prices for many Maui rental cars are up down sharply over last week. this marks a return to high-season pricing in advance of the July 4 holiday. The cheapest cars from from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) are priced at a reasonable $258/week, but minivans are at an astronomical level of $1,339/week. A notable exception to the overall increasing price trend is with convertibles, that have fallen two weeks in a row. Looking ahead, prices are expected to come down slightly after the holiday, but remain in a summer high season range through July. Keep reading for all the details.
Fig. 1. Rental car prices in Maui are holding steady going into June 2025.
Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of June 23, 2025.
Category Price Change Company
Economy $258 +14% Dollar
Midsize $295 +24% Dollar
Jeep $657 +75% Payless
Convertbl $395 -20% Payless
SUV $601 +139% Alamo
7 St SUV $1,010 +41% Budget
Minivan $1,339 + 53% Avis
For the week of Monday 6/23/2025, the lowest price for renting a car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) for one week is $258/week from Dollar - that's up 14% from last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is up 24% to $295/week, also from Dollar. Jeeps were up steeply $657/week, from Payless, 75% more than last week. Convertibles were down for the second week in a row, by 20%, to $395/week, from also from Payless. The price for the cheapest SUV more than doubled, up 139% to $601/week, from Alamo. 7-seat SUV's also increased, up 41% to $1,010/week, from Budget. Minivan prices showed a big increase, up 53%, to $1,339/week, from Avis, making them the most expensive vehicles to rent this week.
This week's sharp prices in nearly all categories come on the heels of several weeks of moderate week-to-week increases that began in late April/early May, when prices hit a shoulder season bottom. It is normal to see a firming up of prices for the July 4 holiday, Prices for most vehicles are near or above their median for the last year, signaling an entry into the high season/holiday range.
Convertibles were the exception to the overall increase. The price for convertibles fell this week for the second week in a row, bringing them 37% below their median of the last year. Prices significantly below the median signal a low season range, which would be out-of-sync with normal seasonal variation at this time. It is possible this anomaly is due to a new shipment of convertibles arriving and being put into service. When this happens, it takes some times for the newly available vehicles to be absorbed into the working inventory, and companies are likely to discount in order to get the cars off the lot.
Fig. 2. Maui car rental prices from the last 13 months, with advance reservation prices for the coming five weeks.
As of today, June 22, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows for the dates shown:

07/21/25 $256 $269
07/28/25 $254 $287
These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 2.
Advance reservation prices appear to be forming a peak over the next week or two, then returning to slightly lower levels where they remain for the rest of the summer season
Figure 3. Average car rental costs in Maui from 2013 to 2018 show significant fluctuations, with a notable spikes in late December and mid-February, and a marked increase during the next five-week period highlighted in red.
This price movement around the upcoming holiday is consistent with the historical trend of prices reaching their summer high around the July 4 holiday. We've documented this trend in our five-year price tracking study, that followed prices week-to-week for five years between 2013 and 2018.
The five-year average prices showing the seasonal variation throughout a year are illustrated in figure 3.
Historically, between 2013 and 2018, prices remain at summer season levels through July and into early August, before dropping back to shoulder season levels for September.
This same pattern was repeated again last year in summer of 2024.
Figure 4. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to May 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.
Beginning in mid-December of 2024, we have tracked the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we check the price one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and save the numbers for comparison.
Since mid-February of this year, prices closer to the reservation date have stayed consistently below the longer advance price - but the gap has been variable. At times that coincide with heavier travel holidays, like mid-February Presidents Day and later March Spring Break, short lead-time prices rose to narrow the gap with longer advance price; only small discounts possible with last minute booking for these periods.
For the last four weeks the gap between long lead time prices and short lead time prices has remained relatively small - but it is not because of a surge in prices last minute. Rather, it is because the longer advance prices were uncharacteristically weak. This is illustrated in Figure 3.
Figure 5. Comparison of airport and off-airport car rental costs in Maui, showing fluctuating prices for economy/compact cars over 36 days in advance, highlighting a price drop closer to the rental date starting June 23, 2025.
We have tracked the evolution of prices for tomorrow's rental, week by week, for the last five weeks. This is illustrated in Figure 5.
Date Off-OGG OGG
06/22/25 $266.00 $258.00
06/15/24 $183.00 $233.00
06/08/25 $192.00 $254.00
06/01/25 $221.00 $245.00
05/25/25 $282.00 $329.00
05/18/25 $248.00 $269.00
Five weeks ago, for the cheapest one-week rental starting tomorrow, June 23, the advance price from OGG was $269/week. Over the last few weeks, the price trended mostly downward to a minimum of $233/week reached last week. From there it has gone up $25 to today's last minute price of $258/week, which is only $11 less than the five-week advance price of $269/week. Off-airport prices followed a similar trajectory, with the minimum reached one week ago, but the last-minute price slightly above the price five weeks in advance.
For tomorrow's rental the best prices were one week in advance, for both airport and off-airport prices.
Fig. 5. Price of one-week car rental in Maui, comparing off-airport locations with airport locations for popular vehicle types.
Most of the time, Maui's off-airport car rental prices are lower than airport prices due to a number of factors that we have covered in a previous blog post, titled "Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024."
Throughout the past winter and spring season, we have seen a disruption of this pattern due to unexpected strong demand and limited supply at off-airport locations, with the off-airport prices in many cases higher than airport prices.
The airport vs. off-airport prices for this week are illustrated in Figure 6.
This week, we are seeing off-airport supply limitations kicking in again, with prices for most vehicle categories almost uniformly higher off-airport.
The exception is minivans, that are price higher at the airport. However the price difference is relatively small, and both the airport price and the off-airport price are up significantly from last week.
These prices are from our survey taken on 6/22/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 6/23/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. For more info on the companies we cover, see our blog post on customer satisfaction ratings for these Maui car rental companies .
As we've noted in previous blog posts , the price for an off-airport rental is usually lower than an airport rental, due to two factors:
Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, June16.
COST CHANGE AIRPORT
$316 +14% Honolulu (HNL)
$258 +40% Maui Kahului Airport (OGG)
$254 -5% Kauai Lihue Airport (LIH)
$343 0% Kona Airport (KOA)
$258 0% Hilo Airport (ITO)
This week prices for car rentals at Big Island airports are virtually unchanged from last week, with Kona at $343/week and Hilo at $258/week. Honolulu is up moderately, to $316, 14% over last week. Kauai is down just 5% to $254/week. Maui saw the biggest price movement, up 40%, to $258/week. This move breaks Maui's 12-week streak as the cheapest island for renting a car, but it is only $4 more than Kauai, the cheapest this week.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 3, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?
