May 11, 2025 - After falling steeply in the last weeks, Maui car rental prices are remaining at or near 52-week lows. The cheapest economy car for Maui's Kahului airport is just $169/week with all taxes and fees included. Popular vehicles at record low price levels are Jeeps at just $305/week, SUV's at $225/week, and minivans at $247/week. Based on historical data, prices are expected to remain low or drop even further through the remaining weeks of May. Continue reading for all the details.
Fig. 1. Rental car prices in Maui are in the off-season range going into May 2025.
Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of May 12, 2025.
Category Price Change Company
Economy $169 0% Payless
Midsize $210 0% Payless
Jeep $305 -29% Thrifty
Convertbl $476 +12% SiXT
SUV $225 0% Payless
7 St SUV $378 +18% Payless
Minivan $247 -23% Payless
For the week of Monday 5/12/2025, the lowest price for renting a car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) for one week is $169/week from Payless, unchanged from last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is $210/week also unchanged, from Payless. Jeeps are down a whopping 29% to just $305/week from Thrifty, reverising their price increase from last week. Convertibles did increase 12% to $476/week at SixT, making them the highest price category. The cheapest SUV prices stayed at the same astonishingly low level of just $225/week, from Payless. Minivan prices were down again this week, this time by 23%, to just $247/week, from Payless.
These low price levels are a confirmation of the seasonal cycle of low numbers of visitor arrivals during the May shoulder season. This year's seasonally low numbers are made even lower by a slow recovery from the travel interruptions caused by the Lahaina wildfires of August 2023, and, as reported in most news outlets, a general weakness in consumer confidence due to uncertainty about the general state of the US economy.
Fig. 2. Maui car rental prices from the last 13 months with forecast of the coming five weeks.
Online reservation systems are showing prices trending upward from their current level. As of today, May 11, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows:
DATE OFF-OGG OGG
05/11/25 $160 $169
05/18/25 $199 $222
05/25/25 $150 $229
06/01/25 $147 $260
06/08/25 $217 $259
06/15/25 $217 $257
If booked today, the price for a one-week rental starting five weeks from now at OGG airport would be $257/week, which is $88/week or 52% more than a rental starting tomorrow. The off-airport price for a rental starting in five weeks is $217/week, $57/week or 36% more than a rental starting tomorrow.
These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 2. They show an upward trend in advance prices taking place over the coming weeks.
Fig. 3. Maui Car Rental Prices: A historical price trend based on five years of averaged prices highlights low prices in April and May.
In contrast, reviewing the historical data, it is unlikely that this upward price trend will actually materialize. The average weekly price chart from our ground-breaking five-year price tracking study carried out from 2013 to 2018 is illustrated in Figure 3. It shows last-minute prices staying consistently low or even decreasing as the date progresses from mid-May into early June, before rising again for the summer travel season beginning in mid-June.
Not only did we track the last-minute price, we also tracked the prices one month in advance and three months in advance over the same five-year period.
Fig. 4. Average cost trends for renting a car in Maui over five years show varying prices based on booking time: renting last-minute typically leads to lower rates, except for peak periods around Christmas and Presidents' day holidays. Booking at the last minute typically offers the most savings.
The difference between last-minute prices and advance reservation prices is an indicator of the state of supply and availability from the car rental providers. When supply is limited, last minute prices ratchet up from their advance levels. When there is over-supply, prices drop at the last minute. These changes follow a seasonal pattern that we covered in a blog post titled "When Is The Best Time To Rent A Car in Maui?"
On average, based on five years of historical price data, the last minute price is lower than advance reservation prices nearly 90% of the time. The cross-over points from higher last minute prices to lower last minute prices mark the seasonal transitions from high season pricing to low season pricing (see Figure 4).
Specifically, for the upcoming seasonal span from mid-May into mid-June, hte five-year price tracking study shows advance prices consistently higher than last-minute prices over this period.
Figure 5. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to May 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.
More recently, from mid-December of 2024, we have tracked the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. For several weeks, from early January, prices were consistently ratcheting up in the days or weeks before the reservation date. Notably, for the six weeks from January 12 to February 17, the last minute price for an economy car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) was on average $152/week more than the price one week in advance (see Figure 5), However, from late February until now, prices one week in advance or at the last minute have both stayed below the advance price booked five weeks in advance. This trend is expected to continue.
Advance reservation systems are showing an upward bump in price that coincides with the Memorial Day holiday at the end of May. However, we have been monitoring advance prices for that date, and they have dropped significantly already, The price for a Memorial day reservation was $383/week three weeks ago. One week ago, the price for the same reservation dropped to $220/week. Today it is up slightly to $229/week - a savings of 40% over the price from three weeks ago. It is likely that the price for Memorial Day will stay at or near the current level.
For the cheapest one-week rental starting tomorrow, the advance price five weeks ago was $302. Then it fell steadily week-to-week to $297, then $272, then $248, then $222 last week, before hittint today's low level of $169/week. The total savings from booking at the last minute versus booking five weeks in advance were $133/week or a drop of 44% compared to the earlier price.
Advance Price Diff. % Saved
1 day $169
1 week $222 $53 24%
5 weeks $302 $133 44%
For the rental starting tomorrow, the savings from booking last minute were 24% compared to one week in advance, and 44% lower compared to five weeks in advance. Definitely the best price was not available until the last minute. Note: these price movements apply only for the cheapest compact car category. The change may have been different for other vehicle categories.
For the coming weeks, our indicators are pointing to prices for last minute reservations continuing be lower than advance prices. Anyone with advance reservations should consider re-booking if their reservation terms allow it.
Fig. 6. Price of one-week car rental in Maui, comparing off-airport locations with airport locations for popular vehicle types.
Most of the time, Maui's off-airport car rental prices are lower than airport prices due to a number of factors that we have covered in a previous blog post, titled "Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024."
Throughout the past winter and spring season, we have seen a disruption of this pattern due to unexpected strong demand and limited supply at off-airport locations, with the off-airport prices in many cases higher than airport prices.
This week, the normal pattern of prices lower off-airport is in effect for nearly every vehicle type, with some exceptions. For convertibles and 7-seat SUV's, there is zero availability reported at off-airport locations. And for Jeeps, this week's exceptionally low airport prices have fallen below the off-airport price.
These prices are from our survey taken on 5/11/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 5/12/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. For more info on the companies we cover, see our blog post on customer satisfaction ratings for these Maui car rental companies .
As we've noted in previous blog posts, the price for an off-airport rental is usually lower than an airport rental, due to two factors:
Exceptions do occur from time to time and we do report them when they do.
Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, May 12.
COST CHANGE AIRPORT
$237 0% Honolulu (HNL)
$165 0% Maui Kahului Airport (OGG)
$365 71% Kauai Lihue Airport (LIH)
$231 0% Kona Airport (KOA
$265 2% Hilo Airport (ITO)
This week prices for car rentals at all Hawaii major island airports have held steady at last week's low levels. Honolulu was unchanged at $237/week, Kahului was also unchanged at $165/week. Kona was unchanged toat$231/week. And Hilo was up only 2%, to $265/week. The only exception to the overall trend was Kauai's Lihue airport (LIH), up a whopping 71% to $365/week. We have no explanation for the unusual price movement at LIhue. Rates at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) were once again the cheapest, nearly $50/week less than the next lowest price, that was on Kauai.
As we mentioned already, this week's car rental prices in Maui have fallen nearly to the same low level they reached during the travel ban that followed the Lahaina wildfire disaster. For prices to fall this low, it takes a combination of factors that drastically affect visitor numbers and the level of demand for rental cars. Here are the factors that we see producing these low prices:
Given these factors and the possibility of lasting effects, we expect the rental car market to stay very week through the summer and fall until the next winter holiday season.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 3, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?"
