June 8, 2025 - Prices for most Maui rental cars saw only small movement from last week. The exceptions were Jeeps, that had been priced at a discount for several weeks, and rose 27% this week. And minivans, that spiked by 2x last week, and dropped by nearly half this week. With these changes, all categories have come to fall within a normal early summer seasonal range, with no outliers. The cheapest cars from from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) are priced at just $236/week. Convertibles are the priciest pick, at $631/week. And in an unusual sweep, Thrifty has locked up the lowest price this week for every vehicle category that we track for reasons that we discuss below. Looking ahead, no big price movements are expected for the remainder of June. Higher prices will arrive right around the Independence Day holiday in early July. Keep reading for all the details.
Fig. 1. Rental car prices in Maui are holding steady going into June 2025.
Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of June 9, 2025.
Category Price Change Company
Economy $236 0% Thrifty
Midsize $276 0% Thrifty
Jeep $426 +27% Thrifty
Convertbl $631 +2% Thrifty
SUV $308 -2% Thrifty
7 St SUV $355 -4% Thrifty
Minivan $393 -48% Thrifty
For the week of Monday 6/9/2025, the lowest price for renting a car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) for one week is $236/week from Thrifty, unchanged from last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is $276/week also from Thrifty; also unchanged. Jeeps were up 27% to $426/week, again from Thrifty. Convertibles were up slightly from last week, by only 2%, to $631/week, from Thrifty. The price for the cheapest SUV was down 4% to $308/week, from Thrifty. Minivan prices showed the biggest movement, down by 48%, to $393/week, from Thrifty.
The price movements for Jeeps and minivans can be viewed as corrections from their previous levels. Jeeps had been renting at unusually low discounted levels for several weeks, most likely because of a large shipment of these vehicles being slowly put into service - over the last few weeks, these vehicles were seen being processed on the airport lots. As for minivans, their price spiked unexpectedly last week, and has now returned to a normal seasonal level - why all the excitement in this particularly unexciting category, it is not in our power to know.
Notably this week, Thrifty made a clean sweep of the lowest price for every vehicle type. Usually, there is more than one company in contention for the lowest price across various categories. This week's sweep by Thrifty is an indication of an aggressive move to gain share, in a relatively weak demand environment. We will have to wait and see whether other companies will enter into a race to the bottom to compete with this move.

Online reservation systems are showing advance reservation prices relatively flat over the next few weeks then hitting a small upward spike at about the time of the Fourth of July holiday. As of today, June 8, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows:
DATE OFF-OGG OGG
06/08/25 $164 $236
06/15/25 $170 $254
06/22/25 $192 $254
06/29/25 $192 $244
07/06/25 $194 $324
07/13/25 $294 $329
These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 2.
If booked today, the price for a one-week rental of an economy/compact starting on July 6 at OGG airport would be $324/week; this is down significantly (a 28% drop) from the best price of $451/week that was available last week for the same rental. The off-airport price for July 6 is is $194/week, also down significantly (a 38% drop) from the best price of $316/week available one week ago for a rental on the same date.
We don't know how the advance prices are set- is it by humans, or by algorithms - but either way, it appears that prices are factoring unexpectedly weak demand for the July 4 holiday period, leading to the drop in advance reservation prices as the date draws closer.
This week's aggressive pricing by Thrifty may be an indication of things to come as more companies cut prices in the face of weak demand for the summer season and for the summer peak period that includes the July 4 holiday.
Figure 3. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to May 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.
Figure 4. Cost trends for renting an economy or compact car in Maui show slightly lower prices for last minute-booking , with off-airport rentals consistently cheaper than airport pickups. The analysis is based on prices from major rental companies for a one-week rental starting June 9, 2025, including all applicable taxes and fees.
Beginning in mid-December of 2024, we have tracked the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we check the price one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and save the numbers for comparison.
Since mid-February of this year, prices closer to the reservation date have stayed consistently below the longer advance price - but the gap has been variable. At times that coincide with heavier travel holidays, like mid-February Presidents Day and later March Spring Break, the difference between last minute price and longer advance price narrowed, with only small discounts possible with last minute booking for these periods.
This week, we are again seeing a closing of the price gap between advance booking and last minute booking. But this time it is not because of a surge in prices last minute. Rather, it is because the longer advance prices were uncharacteristically weak. This is illustrated in Figure 3.
Five weeks ago, for the cheapest one-week rental starting tomorrow, June 9, the advance price from OGG was $251/week. Over the last few weeks, the price meandered up and down within a relatively narrow range, to land at $236/week today. The savings from booking last-minute vs. five weeks in advance was only $15. Similarly, the last-minute price for off-airport rentals was only $16/week less than the price booked five weeks in advance.
Date Off-OGG OGG
06/08/25 $164.00 $236.00
06/01/25 $191.00 $234.00
5/25/25 $215.00 $267.00
5/18/25 $227.00 $264.00
5/11/25 $217.00 $259.00
5/4/25 $180.00 $251.00
This movement of the advance prices for tomorrow's rental is illustrated in Figure 4.
For both airport prices and off-airport prices, the progression of prices as the reservation date approached stayed within a relatively narrow range - in other words there was relatively little price sensitivity relative to the advance lead time for the reservation. This means that the advance price estimates in the reservation systems hit close to the mark in estimating the level of demand from five weeks out up until the reservation date.
Fig. 5. Price of one-week car rental in Maui, comparing off-airport locations with airport locations for popular vehicle types.
Most of the time, Maui's off-airport car rental prices are lower than airport prices due to a number of factors that we have covered in a previous blog post, titled "Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024."
Throughout the past winter and spring season, we have seen a disruption of this pattern due to unexpected strong demand and limited supply at off-airport locations, with the off-airport prices in many cases higher than airport prices.
This week, the normal pattern of prices lower off-airport is in effect for economy cars, midsize cars, convertibles, and SUV's. However for Jeeps and minivans, the lower prices are at the airport. Those seem to be short supply off-airport, with better availability at the airport, resulting in lower prices.
The airport vs. off-airport prices for this week are illustrated in Figure 5.
These prices are from our survey taken on 6/8/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 6/0/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. For more info on the companies we cover, see our blog post on customer satisfaction ratings for these Maui car rental companies .
As we've noted in previous blog posts , the price for an off-airport rental is usually lower than an airport rental, due to two factors:
Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, June 9.
COST CHANGE AIRPORT
$312 -58% Honolulu (HNL)
$236 -2% Maui Kahului Airport (OG
$264 -25% Kauai Lihue Airport (LIH)
$248 0% Kona Airport (KOA)
$259 0% Hilo Airport (ITO)
This week prices for car rentals at Hawaii's major island airports saw a correction from last week's price spike in Honolulu, that fell by 58% to return to a normal seasonal level, and a drop of 25% in Kauai's Lihue airport, bringing it inline with the other islands. Maui, Kona, and Hilo saw very small changes from the week before. Rates at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) remain the cheapest of all the islands, for the eleventh week in a row, but only a nudge cheaper than Kona.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. . For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?
