August 11, 2025 - This week, prices for most Maui rental cars have settled into shoulder season range. Even prices for SUV's, that surged due to the minivan recall, have eased to normal levels as visitor volume slows down after the summer peak. But the Chrysler recall that we reported previous is keeping minivan prices much higher than usual.
The cheapest car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) was just $250/week, but the cheapest minivan was $1,431/week. Cheaper rates were available off-airport for some vehicles. Prices are expected to stay in the same range going into late August and early September. Keep reading for all the details.
Fig. 1. Rental car prices in Maui are on the way down in August 2025, but with minivans and 7-seat SUV's above normal levels.
Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of August 4, 2025.
Category Price Change Company
Economy $250 +7% Payless
Midsize $299 0% Thrifty
Jeep $402 -9% Thrifty
Convertbl $383 +8% Payless
SUV $298 -15% Payless
7 St SUV $477 -26% Thrifty
Minivan $1,431 -5% Payless
For the week of Monday 8/11/2025, the cheapest rental car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) is $250/week for one week from Payless - that's up 7% from last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is unchanged at $299/week, from Thrifty. Jeeps were down 9% to $402/week, from Payless. Convertibles are up slightly, at $383/week from Payless, 8% more than last week. The price for for the cheapest SUV went down 15% from last week, at $298/week, from Payless. 7-seat SUV's also dropped, by 26%, to $477/week, from Thrifty. Minivan are down by 5% but still much higher than usual, at $1,431/week, from Payless.
We can gain some insight into the current market conditions by comparing the current price in each vehicle category to its median price over the last 52 weeks.
Vehicle Price Median Premium/Discount
Economy $250 $274 -9%
Midsize $299 $337 -11%
Jeep $402 $562 -28%
Convertbl $383 $620 -38%
SUV $298 $392 -24%
7 st SUV $477 $568 -16%
Minivan $1,431 $724 +98%
Prices in nearly every vehicle category are at a discount to their median price from the last 52-weeks. This includes economy/compact, midsize, Jeep, and convertible, and SUV's. This reflects shoulder season pricing, which is the lower price level between the summer peak and the beginning of the fall travel season. The discount for economy/compact cars is 9%, for mid-size it is 11%, 28% for Jeeps, 38% for convertibles, 24% for standard SUV's, and 16% for 7-seat SUV's. But the picture is different for minivans. The impact of the Chrysler minivan recall is still being felt, despite slowing demand; they are at a 98% premium (practically double) to their median price for the last year.
For nearly every vehicle type except minivans, this week's price is about the same as the price one year ago, reflecting normal off-season pricing. But minivan prices are staying higher than usual and may spike again when fall travel kicks off.
Fig. 2. Maui car rental prices from the last 13 months, with advance reservation prices for the coming five weeks.
As of today, August 10, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows for the dates shown:
DATE OFF-OGG OGG
08/12/25 $167 $250
08/19/25 $167 $247
08/26/25 $167 $230
09/02/25 $175 $269
09/09/25 $185 $266
09/17/25 $249 $265
These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 2.
For the economy/compact category, prices appear to have settled at their low season levels, in the lowest range of prices for the year.
Advance reservation systems are showing prices firming up again in early September. There does not appear to be any expectation of a Labor Day holiday bump. This is consistent with price action for the last two major holidays, Memorial Day and and Independence Day, where high advance prices fizzled out as the holiday dates approached.
Smart travelers will look for last-minute deals on rentals in the coming weeks.
Figure 3. Average car rental costs in Maui from 2013 to 2018 show significant fluctuations, with a notable spikes in late December and mid-February, and a marked increase during the next five-week period highlighted in red.
Supporting this, we do not see any Labor day bump in our historical data that covers five years of week-by-week pricing for five years from 2013 through 2018.
The five-year average prices showing the seasonal variation throughout a year are illustrated in the price chart in figure 3.
Historically, between 2013 and 2018, prices fall from their summer high season levels in August, and stay at a depressed shoulder season level from then on through most of September.
Figure 4. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to August 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.
More recently, this same pattern was repeated again last year in summer and fall of 2024, as illustrated in the price chart in Figure 2. In summer 2024, prices peaked for July 4, then dipped and leveled off for August and September, and did not begin to rise again until later in September.
Beginning in mid-December of 2024, we have tracked the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we check the price one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and save the numbers for comparison.
We've seen longer range prices for reservations made five weeks in advance showing peaks coinciding with expected busy travel periods, the most recent being Memorial Day and Independence Day - and now upcoming Labor Day. But for both recent holidays, advance prices fizzled down to a much lower level for last minute bookings. This is shown in the price chart of Figure 4.
Figure 5. Chart of rental costs for economy/compact cars in Maui, showing a decrease in prices for both airport and off-airport locations as the rental date approaches.
For rentals beginning tomorrow, the last minute price available today is lower than the price available five weeks ago. This holds true for both airport rentals and off-airport rentals.
The progression of advance reservation prices for a one week rental starting tomorrow, August 11, is illustrated in the price chart in Figure 5.
Off-OGG OGG Days in Advance
$167.00 $250.00 1
$167.00 $216.00 8
$173.00 $216.00 15
$235.00 $264.00 22
$251.00 $265.00 29
$243.00 $317.00 36
The price for a rental from the airport starting tomorrow went down from $317/week five weeks ago, to a low price of $216/week last week, then rising to hit $250/week today. The best time to book was one week ago, saving $99/week off the price four weeks prior. The price for an off-airport rental beginning tomorrow also came down, from $243/week if booked five weeks ago, to just $167/week if booked today - that's a $76 drop
Fig. 6. Price of one-week car rental in Maui, comparing off-airport locations with airport locations for popular vehicle types.
Historically, Maui's off-airport car rental prices have been expected to be lower than airport prices due to a number of factors that we have explored in a previous blog post, titled "Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024. "
However, in recent months, we have seen a disruption of the historical pattern, with off-airport prices frequently higher than airport prices. This may be due to off-airport locations cutting back on inventory and operations in the difficult business environment that came after the Lahaina wildfires of August 2023. .
The airport vs. off-airport prices for this week are illustrated in Figure 6.
This week, we are seeing off-airport prices lower than airport prices in economy/compact, SUV, and minivan. For mid-size cars, the airport price is lower. For Jeeps, convertibles and 7-seat SUV, there is no off-airport availability at all.
These prices are from our survey taken on 8/10/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 8/4/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy/compact Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. For more info on the companies we cover, see our blog post on customer satisfaction ratings for these Maui car rental companies .
As we've noted previously, there are fundamental factors that contribute historically to higher prices from the airport.
However this model appears to be turned on its head in light of the current operational environment for the rental car business in Maui. Whether and when we see a return to the usual price pattern is unknown.
Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, July 28.
COST CHANGE AIRPORT
$275 -30% Honolulu (HNL)
$196 +5% Maui Kahului Airport (OGG)
$345 -27% Kauai Lihue Airport (LIH)
$310 -24% Kona Airport (KOA)
$274 +1% Hilo Airport (ITO)
This week prices for car rentals at the five major airports in Hawaii were mostly down from last week. Kauai's Lihue (LIH) was down 27% to $345/week, still the most expensive airport for renting a car. In second place was Kona (KOA), at $310/week, down 24% from the week before. Next was Honolulu, down 30%, to $275/week, and Hilo (ITO) was was just one dollar less, at $274/week, up 1% from last week. The cheapest by far was Maui's Kahului Airport, at just $196/week. Maui had the lowest price for 16 out of the last 19 weeks and was the second lowest for the other three. This reflects the very slow recovery of travel to Maui following the Lahaina wildfire disaster that happened almost exactly two years ago.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 3, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?
