June 2025 Brings Seasonally Low Prices For Most Maui Rental Cars

June 15, 2025 - This week, prices for most Maui rental cars are down moderately from their already low levels of last week. The exception was for larger capacity vehicles, with minivans and seven-seat SUV's both increasing significantly. The cheapest cars from from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) are priced at just $226/week. Minivans are the priciest pick, at $873/week. Looking ahead, no big price movements are expected for the remainder of June. The prices for the July 4 holiday period have been softening week-to-week, indicating that they may stay in or close to an affordable shoulder season range. Keep reading for all the details.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO RENT A CAR IN MAUI ON JUNE 16, 2025?

Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of June 16, 2025.

Category Price Change Company
Economy $226 -4% SiXT
Midsize $238 -14% SiXT
Jeep $376 -12% Thrifty
Convertbl $496 -21% SiXT
SUV $251 -19% SiXT
7 St SUV $718 102% Budget
Minivan $873 122% Payless

For the week of Monday 6/16/2025, the lowest price for renting a car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) for one week is $226/week from SiXT - that's down $10 from last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is $238/week also from SiXT, down 21% from the week before. Jeeps were down 12% to $376/week, from Thrifty. Convertibles were down 21%, to $496/week, from SiXT. The price for the cheapest SUV was down 19% to $251/week, from SiXT. But 7-seat SUV's doubled, up 102% to $718/week, from Budget. Minivan prices showed the biggest movement, more than doubling, up 122%, to $873/week, from Payless.

The significant price increases, more than doubling, for the larger passenger capacity vehicles, minivans and 7-seat SUV's, were in sharp contrast to the other vehicle categories (economy, midsize, Jeep, convertible, and regular SUV), that all saw moderate decreases in the weekly price, ranging from 4% to 21% down from the previous week. Minivans in particular have seen some unusual volatility over the last few weeks, alternating sharp increases with sizable drops week-to-week. It is possible that this latest upward movement of the people-mover categories - minivans and seven-seat suv's - reflects a seasonal summer increase in family travel, i.e. larger parties formed by parents with kids in tow.

Last week we noted that Thrifty had made an aggressive move to drop prices and made a clean sweep of the lowest price across all vehicle categories. This week it appears that other companies are countering Thrifty's move in a fight for market share. This week SiXT claims the lowest price in four out of the seven categories that we track.

MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICE FORECAST FOR JUNE AND JULY 2025

Online reservation systems are showing advance reservation prices remaining relatively flat over the next few week into mid-July. The holiday bump in advance price for July 4 has almost completely evaporated.. As of today, June 15, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows:

DATE OFF-OGG OGG
06/15/25 $167 $226
06/22/25 $183 $233
06/29/25 $183 $258
07/06/25 $205 $260
07/13/25 $187 $267
07/20/25 $183 $269

These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 2.

If booked today, the price for a one-week rental of an economy/compact starting on July 6 at OGG airport would be $260/week. One week ago, booking the same rental would have cost $324/week. And one week before that it was $451. These have been three weeks in a row of week-to-week decrease in the advance price for the holiday. There is a similar trend in the off-airport numbers.

Last year, rental rates for the July 4 holiday rose sharply from the June rental prices (see Figure 2), reaching nearly $500/week for the cheapest available car. But this year, if the movement in the advance prices for the holiday is any indication, it is unlikely that the holiday will see any dramatic price increase - the present trend is reflecting weak demand in advance of the holiday. There are still three weeks to go, so anything could happen. If prices for the holiday do fall further, it is unlikely that it will be by very much, as the current price of $226/week virtually sets a floor below which the holiday price is unlikely to drop. On the other hand there is always the possibility - even if small - of a last minute squeeze leading to a surge in the price. Surges in price are not necessarily caused by by strong demand. If rental companies anticipating weak demand fall behind on logistics and operations, then all it takes is a small unexpected bump in demand to cause a price surge. We have seen this happen many times, and given the unpredictability of this moment, Independence Day travelers wishing to hedge their bets may look at locking in the current price for the holiday.

Figure 3. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to May 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.

Figure 4. Cost trends for renting an economy or compact car in Maui show slightly lower prices for last minute-booking , with off-airport rentals consistently cheaper than airport pickups. The analysis is based on prices from major rental companies for a one-week rental starting June 9, 2025, including all applicable taxes and fees.

HOW MUCH WERE THIS WEEK'S LAST-MINUTE SAVINGS?

Beginning in mid-December of 2024, we have tracked the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we check the price one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and save the numbers for comparison.

Since mid-February of this year, prices closer to the reservation date have stayed consistently below the longer advance price - but the gap has been variable. At times that coincide with heavier travel holidays, like mid-February Presidents Day and later March Spring Break, short lead-time prices rose to narrow the gap with longer advance price; only small discounts possible with last minute booking for these periods.

For the last three weeks the gap between long lead time prices and short lead time prices has remained relatively small - but it is not because of a surge in prices last minute. Rather, it is because the longer advance prices were uncharacteristically weak. This is illustrated in Figure 3.

Five weeks ago, for the cheapest one-week rental starting tomorrow, June 16, the advance price from OGG was $257/week. Over the last few weeks, the price meandered up and down within a relatively narrow range, to land at $226/week today. The savings from booking last-minute vs. five weeks in advance was only $31. For an off-airport rental, the savings from booking last minute were more significant, $51/week or about 25% less than the price booked five weeks in advance.

Date Off-OGG OGG
06/15/24 $167.00 $226.00
06/08/25 $170.00 $254.00
06/01/25 $272.00 $273.00
5/25/25 $239.00 $324.00
5/18/25 $248.00 $269.00
5/11/25 $217.00 $257.00

This movement of the advance prices for tomorrow's rental is illustrated in Figure 4.

For both airport prices and off-airport prices, the progression of prices as the reservation date approached stayed within a relatively narrow range - in other words there was relatively little price sensitivity relative to the advance lead time for the reservation. This means that the advance price estimates in the reservation systems hit close to the mark in estimating the level of demand from five weeks out up until the reservation date.

DOES IT COST LESS TO RENT OFF-AIRPORT?

Most of the time, Maui's off-airport car rental prices are lower than airport prices due to a number of factors that we have covered in a previous blog post, titled "Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024.

Throughout the past winter and spring season, we have seen a disruption of this pattern due to unexpected strong demand and limited supply at off-airport locations, with the off-airport prices in many cases higher than airport prices.

This week, the pattern of prices lower off-airport is in effect for economy cars, midsize cars, convertibles, and SUV's. However for Jeeps and minivans, the lower prices are at the airport. For convertibles and 7-seat SUV's, there is no off-airport availability..

The airport vs. off-airport prices for this week are illustrated in Figure 5.

These prices are from our survey taken on 6/15/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 6/16/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. For more info on the companies we cover, see our blog post on customer satisfaction ratings for these Maui car rental companies

As we've noted in previous blog posts, the price for an off-airport rental is usually lower than an airport rental, due to two factors:

  1. Higher mandatory taxes and fees that are added to the cost of an airport rental, and
  2. A discretionary "convenience premium" that rental companies charge at the airport. For details, see for example Is It Cheaper to Rent a Car at the Airport in Maui? Updated for 2024.

IS MAUI THE MOST EXPENSIVE HAWAIIAN ISLAND FOR CAR RENTAL?

Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, June16.

COST CHANGE AIRPORT
$278 -11% Honolulu (HNL)
$184 -22% Maui Kahului Airport (OGG)
$267 + 1% Kauai Lihue Airport (LIH)
$343 +38% Kona Airport (KOA)
$257 -1% Hilo Airport (ITO)

This week prices for car rentals at Hawaii's major island airports are mixed compare to last week. Kauai and Hilo are virtually unchanged. Honolulu and Maui are down moderate amounts - 11% and 22% respectively. Kona is up 38% - there is no information on what may be causing this uptick. Rates at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) remain the cheapest of all the islands, for the twelfth week in a row.

HOW DO WE GET OUR MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICE DATA?

Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.

Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.

Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 3, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?
