Under 25? Ages 20 to 24, you can book a car on our website with an added fee of just $8/day. Look for the listings that say "Reduced 20-24 age young driver fee $8/day." Not every listing has this wording, but if that wording is there on the listing, it means you can rent that car for the price shown PLUS $8 per calendar day.

HOW OLD DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO RENT A CAR IN MAUI?

The absolute minimum age to rent a car from a car rental company is 20. For drivers 18-19, renting from a ride sharing service (like Turo) may be possible, but carries heavy added fees.

WHY DO DRIVERS UNDER 25 HAVE TO PAY AN EXTRA FEE?

It's nothing personal, based on large population statistics, drivers in your age group are found to be at higher risk for damage or loss. It's the same reason your auto insurance costs more.

IS THERE A FEE IF I HAVE A PERFECT DRIVING RECORD OR A PERFECT GPA?

These factors may reduce the cost of your auto insurance, but they don't matter when you are renting a car.

IS THE FEE FOR UNDER 25 INCLUDED IN THE PRICE ON THE WEBSITE?

The $8/day fee for young drivers under 25 is IN ADDITION to the price shown on the website. So for example, for a one week rental, multiply $8 by the number of calendar days, which is 8, and you get 64, plus a 4.5% sales take, about $3, for about $68 dollars per week is the total young driver fee that you add to the price on our Maui car rental booking website .

WHAT MAKES $8/DAY FOR DRIVERS UNDER 25 SUCH A GOOD DEAL?

It is a good deal when you consider that some companies charge between $20 and $30 a day (or more) for drivers under 25, and others won't rent at all to drivers under 25. This makes it a GREAT deal ABSOLUTELY!

WHAT KIND OF CAR CAN I RENT UNDER 25?

Not all cars are available for rentals under 25. Check the listings on our Maui car rental ooking website. Depending on what's available for your dates of rental, you can rent from a range of vehicles including compact cars to minivans and SUV's. Just look for the listings that say "Reduced 20-24 age young driver fee $8/day." You may be excluded from some luxury or exotic models.

NOTE: This young driver special deal is available only with our new car rentals. It is not available with our used local cars.

DO DRIVERS UNDER 25 HAVE TO BUY EXTRA INSURANCE?

You are not required to buy any extra insurance, and you do not need it if you already have your own coverage on your own auto insurance policy that covers you while you rent a car. Check with your insurance agent. When you pick up your rental car, you'll be asked to accept or decline optional charges including insurance. Be sure to review and understand what you are signing for, because once you sign for it, you are obligated to pay it.

CAN DRIVERS UNDER 25 PAY WITH A DEBIT CARD?

The best option is to pay with a credit card. If the card has the word "Debit" printed on it, it is not a credit card. With a debit card, an additional hold may be placed on your card at the time of rental. This hold is removed when your final payment is calculated on return.

CAN A DRIVER UNDER 25 PAY WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S CREDIT CARD?

The name on your credit card and your driver license must match. So, it can be someone else's card, as long as your name is on it.

CAN DRIVERS AGED 18 OR 19 RENT A CAR IN MAUI?

As far as we know, no major company in Maui will rent to drivers aged 18 or 19. These are some options you can try:

If you can get approved as a "guest" in the app, and you find a "host" who rents to 18 and 19, but additional fees may still apply. Note we do not recommend dealing with this greedy, exploitative, and predatory tech-bro company,

Under the radar rentals

Look for private party rentals on Facebook, craigslist, or TikTok - but the quality of the experience can vary greatly.

WHAT ARE OPTIONS FOR GETTING AROUND MAUI WITHOUT A RENTAL CAR?

Uber and public transport to and from and within the major resort areas are not too bad. Here's a map of Maui public bus routes. You can book excursions with tour companies to get further afield (like for example Hana or Haleakala Summit). Or, you may be able to rent an e-bike or scooter.
