September 24, 2023 - Maui rental car rates are a good indicator of the visitor level. They vary with supply and demand. We began charting the one-week rate just after the July 4 holiday, which is one of the peak periods for the year. The Lahaina wildfire sent rates tumbling. This week we're seeing an uptick in the rate available from the Kahului Airport Rentacar Center. Is this reflecting an increase in visitor traffic? Or is it a draw-down of supply as the major rental car companies began sending their unused fleet cars back to the mainland? Most likely it's a combination of both factors leading to the increase. Off-airport rates remain flat. This week's best available rates, for one week starting Monday 9/24, from Kahului Airport (OGG):
