November 9, 2025 - Prices for car rentals from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) stayed at about the same peak level this week after surging last week. Prices for all vehicles are at a significant premium to their median levels over the ear. However off-airport prices moderated significantly from last week, and the savings for off-airport bookings range from 14% for Jeeps to a whopping 57% for compact cars. Advance reservation systems are currently showing moderation in pricing over the next few weeks - but travelers are advised to book in advance for the Thanksgiving holiday, that usually brings a last-minute surge in price. Keep reading for all the details.
Fig. 1. Maui car rental prices at Kahului Airport (OGG) this week and last week, with the percentage change..
Every week, we list the lowest advertised prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the change from the previous week, and the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of November 10, 2025.
Category Price Change Company
Economy $548 -7% Dollar
Midsize $688 0% Hertz
Jeep $940 -5% Thrifty
Convertbl $919 -23% Avis
SUV $1,018 +5% Payless
7 St SUV $1,234 +4% Payless
Minivan $1,114 -9% Payless
The prices quoted here include all applicable taxes and fees.
For the week of Monday 11/10/2025, the cheapest rental car from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG) is $548/week for one week from Dollar; that's just 7% less than last week. The lowest price for a midsize car is $688/week from Hertz, unchanged last week. Jeeps were down just 5%, to $940/week, from Thrifty. Convertibles saw the biggest change, down 23%, to $919/week, from Avis. The price for the cheapest SUV was up 5% to $965/week, from Payless. 7-seat SUV's were up nearly the same, 4%, to $1,234/week, also from SiXT. Minivans gave up 9%, to $1,114/week, from Payless.
Prices rose to high season levels last week, and are staying there with little or no change this week. The only exception is for convertibles, with a sizable 23% drop. New convertible arrivals are being put into service, improving supply and bringing down the price.
Fig. 2. Comparison of current rental prices to the 52-week median for various car types in Maui, with current premium or discount to median.
Prices in all vehicle categories are well above their median price over the last 52 weeks. This is illustrated in Figure 2 and in the table below.
Vehicle Price Median Premium/Discount
Economy $548 $269 104%
Midsize $688 $340 102%
Jeep $940 $569 65%
Convertbl $919 $634 45%
SUV $1,018 $457 123%
7 st SUV $1,234 $616 100%
Minivan $1,114 $754 48%
This week, we are seeing a two-tiered price structure. Prices for Jeeps, convertibles, and minivans are at about 50% over their 52-week median price. Prices for compact cars, mid-size cars, and SUV's are about twice the median price.
This premium in pricing reflects high season rates, and coincide with the Veterans' Day holiday with an increase in visitors taking advantage of extra days off for a fall getaway.
Fig. 3. Maui car rental prices for multiple vehicle types: current vs. one year ago, with % change.
This week's prices are compared with the prices of one year ago in Figure 4 and the table below.
Vehicle Now Last Year Change
Economy $548 $447 23%
Midsize $688 $456 51%
Jeep $940 $762 23%
Convertbl $919 $729 26%
SUV $1,018 $489 108%
7 st SUV $1,234 $616 100%
Minivan $1,114 $724 54%
This week, prices in y every category are higher than the prices one year ago, but not uniformly. Prices for compact, midsize Jeep, Convertible and minivan are up in the range of about 25% to 50% higher than last year. Prices for SUV's are about double.
These across-the-board year-to-year increases could be signaling some recovery in visitor numbers to Maui. Last year's visitor numbers were still suffering the effects of the Lahaina wildfire disaster of August 2023.
Fig. 4. Maui car rental prices from the last 13 months plus price forecast for the next five weeks.
As of today, November 9, 2025, the lowest advertised prices for a one week rental made in advance, both from the airport rentals and off-airport, are as follows for the future dates shown:
DATE OFF-OGG OGG
11/10/25 $234 $548
11/17/25 $192 $250
11/25/25 $233 $280
12/01/25 $226 $266
12/08/25 $241 $318
12/15/25 $237 $273
These advance reservation prices, marked as "Forecast," are illustrated in the area highlighted in Figure 4, which also shows the lowest price evolution over the last 13 months.
For the coming weeks, online reservation systems, are suggesting that prices will drop from this week's level next week, then rise steadily week-to-week through the Thanksgiving holiday into mid-December.
However, with Thanksgiving bringing one of the busiest travel weeks of the year nationwide, there is a strong possibility that prices may spike again for Thanksgiving - as they did last year in what we termed the fall price roller-coaster. It is suggested that smart travelers book the Thanksgiving rentals now, hedging against the possibility that prices might go up.
Figure 5. Price trends for a one-week car rental in Maui from December 2024 to November 2025 show variations based on booking timings: one day, one week, and five weeks in advance.
In mid-December of 2024, we began to track the movement of advance booking prices as the reservation date approaches. Every week, we check the price one week out, two weeks out, three weeks out, up to five weeks out, and save the numbers for comparison.
From mid-February of this year until early October, the prices available one day in advance and one week in advance have been consistently lower than the price five weeks in advance (see figure 5).
However, for most of October and going into early November, last minute prices have been higher than advance prices, and the trend continues this week. This indicates strong demand pressure driving up prices.
This week, the gap between advance pricing and last minute pricing remained about the same as last week. This means , the savings from booking in advance were about the same. However, peering into next week, the one-week advance prices have turned down below the five-week advance price, and it is expected that last-minute prices will follow, with a strong possibility of last-minute savings on bookings for next week.
Fig. 6. The cost for tomorrow's rental booked in advance was significantly lower than the last-minute price 1-day in advance.
The progression of advance reservation prices for a one week rental starting tomorrow, November 10, is illustrated in the price chart in Figure 6.
Off-OGG OGG Days in Advance
$234.00 $548.00 1 (last-minute)
$325.00 $392.00 8 (one week)
$177.00 $697.00 15 (two weeks)
$200.00 $247.00 22 (three weeks)
$197.00 $362.00 29 (four weeks)
$223.00 $312.00 36 (five weeks)
The price for a rental starting tomorrow has increased the last five weeks. The increase is more pronounced for airport rentals, with the last-minute price 75% higher than the price five weeks ago, for the same rental starting on Nov. 10. The increase in the price of an off-airport rental was a modest 5%.
It is worthwhile to note that the increase was not uniform from week-to-week. The advance price showed some volatility, alternating between increases and decreases from week to week, as can be seen in Figure 6.
Fig. 7. Price of one-week car rental in Maui, comparing off-airport locations with airport locations for popular vehicle types.
The cost of renting a car off-airport for a one-week rental beginning on Nov. 10 is shown below, and compared to an airport rental, with the percentage difference. This is illustrated in figure 7.
OGG Off-OGG Savings (%)
Economy $548 $234 57%
Midsize $688 $519 25%
Jeep $940 $811 14%
Convertbl $919 - -
SUV $1,018 $597 41%
7 St SUV $1,234 - -
Minivan $1,114 $615 45%
Savings from renting a vehicle off-airport ranged from 14% for a Jeep (lowest) to 57% cor a compact/economy car (highest).
Note that for convertibles and 7-seat SUV's, there is no availability of these vehicles being reported off-airport, so airport rentals are the only option.
By conventional wisdom, airport prices are expected to be higher than off-airport prices due to higher airport taxes and fees and a convenience premium .
However, over the past two years, it has become apparent that this rule does not hold true all the time across all vehicle categories. We have found that for some vehicles, notably Jeeps, convertibles, and 7-seat SUV's, prices are consistently lower at the airport. This is probably caused by limited supply at the smaller off-airport locations that closed or cut back operations following the Lahaina wildfires.
This week's uniformly lower off-airport prices represent a departure from the expected pattern of higher off-airport prices for Jeeps, and the savings on compact, mid-size, and minivan are in excess of the expected savings based on our statistics.
These prices are from our survey taken on 11/9/25, for a one-week rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), beginning on Monday, 11/10/25, for seven vehicle categories, Economy/compact Car, Midsize Car, Convertible, Jeep, SUV, 7-passenger SUV, and Minivan. The rental companies covered in the survey are Ace, Alamo, Allsave, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, NU, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Figure 8. Cost of one week car rental at major Hawaii airports, this week and last week, with percentage change week-to-week.
Here's a quick survey of the cheapest one-week rental cost from each of the five major Hawaii airports, for a rental beginning on Monday, November 3, 2025. For each airport, we report the lowest price this week and last week, and the difference percentage between the two.
11/2 10/26 CHANGE AIRPORT
$243 $230 6% Honolulu
$234 $570 -59% Maui
$443 $292 52% Kauai
$498 $686 -27% Kona
$497 $276 80% Hilo
This week prices for car rentals at Honolulu changed only 6%. Prices at Maui and Kona came down, and prices at Kauai and Hilo went up. With these changes, Maui regains its position as the cheapest Hawaii destination for renting a car, that it held for 24 out of the last 31 weeks, while coming in second cheapest for seven others.
Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.
Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.
Week-by-week variation of Maui car rental prices averaged over five years, from 2013 to 2018.
Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 3, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration.
