December 31, 2023 - Happy New Year! ABM, the company that operates public parking for Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), is ringing in 2024 with a huge rate increase! Parking fees have held steady for several years, but beginning February 1, the daily parking rate is going up a full 60%, from $15/day to $24/day. Rates for short duration parking - 15 minutes to five hours - are doubling in some cases. 

KAHULUI AIRPORT PARKING RATES

When you rent a car from a one of Maui's local car rental companies, or through a car-sharing service like Turo, you may be given the option to pick up your rental car from the airport parking lot. Usually, you are the one responsible for paying the parking fees on the way out. The parking fees are an added cost on top of your actual rental cost. Depending on how long the car sits awaiting your arrival, the parking fees can add up. With the rate increase, the added cost is even more.

For returning the car, if you have made arrangements for an airport return, then the rental operator will be the one responsible for paying the parking fees. If you select the airport return option, many operators now tack on an additional fee to cover the parking fees. These fees can be in the range of $25-$30 with some of Maui's local car rental companies.

Here is exactly how much it will cost to park at Kahului Airport (OGG) public parking, hour by hour, with the new rates effective Feb.1 2024 compared to the old rates:

KAHULUI AIRPORT OVERNIGHT PARKING FEE

So long as your parking duration does not exceed 24 hours, for parking between 5 hours and 24 hours, the fee for parking overnight has gone from $15 to $24, After 24 hours, the fees start adding up again bour by hour according to the above schedule. 

PARKING AT MAUI AIRPORT

To access the public parking at Maui airport, approach the airport on Ernest Cravalho Highway. Drive past the rental car return, and follow the signs for "Public Parking." The entrance to the parking lot is in the furthest left lane. Stay to the left of the road divider. The entrance is near the end of the terminal - you will drive past all the terminal buildings. 

PARKING AT OGG AIRPORT

Approximately 2,000 parking spots are available in the public parking lot. The parking lot was renovated in the period of 2019 to 2020. This included re-surfacing, re-drawing the parking lanes, adding a secondary entrance (that has since been closed). Until 2022, the public parking was used by airport employees, including TSA employees. With increased use by peer-to-peer rental vehicles (including TURO), this caused frequent "Parking Lot Full" situations, with no parking available. In 2023, employee parking was moved to the top level of the Consolidated Rent A Car (CONRAC) facility. This freed up about 500 parking stalls. There have been no parking issues since then. 

NEW MONITORING TECHNOLOGY FOR CRACKING DOWN ON PARKING FEE FRAUD

And, to crack down on supposed parking fee fraud - according to ABM, a huge problem - brand new parking machines have been deployed, with OCR cameras that stamp the car's license plate number on the parking ticket on entry, and verify it automatically on exit. 

This is a great technology advancement, but it does not really help with the only form of parking fee fraud we're aware of, which is ABM actually double charging - and in some cases, triple charging - for parking, both with the new system, and the old system. We do have documented instances of both! The new machines started over-charging right from the day they were put into service. Was anyone surprised that the new system was malfunctioning right from the get-go? No, absolutely not. This is typical of what we've come to expect of ABM.
