Have Maui Car Rental Prices Hit Rock Bottom For 2026?

Apr. 26, 2026. Maui car rental prices follow seasonal patterns that repeat from year to year. In 2024 and 2025, the end of April or beginning of May was the point where prices fell to their lowest level of the year, and where the price floor was set for the next year. Will this year follow the same pattern? Are we now at rock bottom? Or will Maui car rental prices go even lower? We take a look at this week's prices and evaluate the factors that could influence future prices. Keep reading for the details.

HOW MUCH IS THE CHEAPEST MAUI RENTAL CAR ON APRIL 27 2026?

Every week, we list the lowest available prices for a one-week car rental from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), for a selection of vehicle categories, with the company offering the best price. This is our overview of Maui car rental prices for the week of April 27, 2026.

Category Price Company

Economy $233 SiXT

Midsize $252 SiXT

Jeep $481 Alamo

Convertbl $612 SiXT

SUV $401 Sixt

7 St SUV $490 Alamo

Minivan $354 Thrifty

The prices quoted here include all applicable taxes and fees. Prices for these vehicle types charted week-to-week for the last 14 months are illustrated in Figure 1.

These are the lowest prices in every car category: The lowest price for a compact car from Kahului Airport (OGG) this week is with SiXT, at $233week.. Mid-size cars are starting at $2525/week, also at SiXT. Jeeps are starting at $481/week, from Alamo. The lowest price for a convertible is $612/week, at SiXT. The cheapest standard SUV's were $401/week, at SiXT, and 7-seat SUV's are starting at $490/week, at Alamo. The cheapest minivans were just $354/week, at Thrifty.

Figure 2. Price comparison for Maui Car Rental as of April 2026 shows mixed changes by vehicle type compared to the year before, with most prices higher year-over-year.

HOW DO MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICES COMPARE TO ONE YEAR AGO?

This is how Maui car rental prices look in the last week of April 2026, beginning Monday April 27, compared to the corresponding week of last year, that began Monday April 28, 2025:

Vehicle Now Last Year Change

Economy $233 $217 7%

Midsize $252 $252 0%

Jeep $481 $364 32%

Convertbl $612 $487 26%

SUV $401 $285 41%

7 st SUV $490 $410 20%

Minivan $354 $355 0%

These numbers are charted in Figure 2.

Broadly speaking, prices this week are higher than they were at the same time last year. However, the increase in price is not uniform across all price categories. SUV's, convertibles, and Jeeps are up in the range of 20% to 40% year-over-year. Mid-size cars - Toyota Camry's and Chevy Malibu's - are up only 7%. Compact cars - the cheapest vehicles available to rent - are unchanged from one year ago. And surprisingly, minivans, that took a wild ride because of the safety recall that hit last summer, and caused their prices to surge to extraordinary highs, are also unchanged, back exactly where they were on year ago.

Figure 3. Lowest advertised rate for a one week rental, compiled weekly from January 2024, shows prices reaching an annual bottom at the end of April or beginning of May in 2024 and 2025.

HAVE MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICES REALLY HIT ROCK BOTTOM FOR 2026?

As you can see from the price chart that extends back to January of 2024, this period we are in right now, the last week of April going into the first week of May, is where prices did set their floor in 2024 and 2025. Absent any other factors, this would make it likely that the same happens again this year, meaning we would be hitting rock bottom for 2026 right around now. However, we do believe there are other factors in play, that make it likely that Maui car rental prices will drop even lower, do to a throttling of demand. In no particular order:

  1. High airfares to Maui - these are driven by the increased cost of fuel, a consequence of the US/Israel war on Iran. This is not likely to be a temporary blip, but a lasting feature.
  2. High cost of accommodations in Maui. Lodging rates compiled by the tourism authorities just seem to rise higher and higher. We hear from customers that this leads them to shorten their Maui vacations or cancel them altogether.
  3. Negative publicity from the recent Pacific storms. Just as many people believed, in the aftermath of the Lahaina wildfire disaster, that the entire island of Maui had burned down, there is now, in the aftermath of the violent storms that hit Hawaii, a perception that all of Maui has been washed away by floods. This can make people hesitant to book a Maui vacation. This perception may take some time to fade away.
  4. Economic uncertainty and volatility in the financial markets. When members of the demographic that takes Maui vacations see their investment portfolios going through wild gyrations, as they have been doing this year, this instills a sense of caution, and they may put a hold on their discretionary spending items, including vacations in Maui, until some sense of stability is restored.

For these reasons, we believe that demand from travelers will be comparatively weak in the coming months. In this case, it is possible that we have not yet hit rock bottom for 2025, and prices for rental cars in Maui will go even lower. This would be good news for travelers, but bad news for the people who depend on car rental for their livelihood.

HOW DO WE GET OUR MAUI CAR RENTAL PRICE DATA?

Prices for Maui car rentals vary from week to week, and the company offering the lowest price also changes from week to week. Furthermore, one company may be offering the lowest price in one vehicle category, for example mid-size cars, while a different company has a better price on another category, for example mini-vans.

Beginning in July 2024, we've tracked the prices on seven vehicle categories - compact, mid-size, Jeep, convertible, SUV, 7-seat SUV, and minivan - from 10 different companies at Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG): Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, SiXT, and Thrifty. Each week, for every vehicle type, we noted which company offered the lowest price. Our weekly price-tracking for the lowest price economy car category goes back to July 2023 - more than one year. These are the data for the charts we post every week.

Figure 4. Week-by-week variation of Maui car rental prices averaged over five years, from 2013 to 2018.

Previously we conducted a five-year price-tracking study for the lowest price economy car category beginning in February 2013 and continuing to February 2018. A sample of these results is in Figure 6, that shows the five-year average of the price over a one-year duration. For details of this massive price-tracking undertaking, and the most important findings on how and when to rent a car, see our blog post of July 14, 2024 titled "When is the best time to rent a car in Maui?
