March 10, 2024 - In case you missed it, last night was the switch from Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time, for most states in the USA, except Arizona and Hawaii, who do not switch.
The easy way to remember how to adjust your clocks is "Spring Forward, Fall back." The switch from Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time happens in the spring, and you turn the clock forward one hour. The switch back to Standard Time happens in the fall, and you turn the clock back one hour.
Of course these days nobody has a clock anymore, they rely on their phones to give them the time, and the phones adjust automatically - so there is no need to remember to do it. But some people might be surprised that they got one hour less to sleep, because their alarm went off one hour early, or that they magically woke up one hour early, by force of habit, before their alarm went off. 

WHEN DOES DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME START?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) in begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November, following the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966.

Between the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, basically all Spring, Summer, and early Fall, most states in the Continental US are on Daylight Saving Time. 

Between the first Sunday in November and the second Sunday in March, basically from mid-Fall to late Winter, most states in the Continental US are on Standard Time.

DOES HAWAII DO DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME?

Nobody in Hawaii has to worry about this, because Hawaii has its own time zone, and Hawaii stays on Standard Time year round. Hawaii never goes on Daylight Saving Time. 

HAWAII STANDARD TIME

However, there is a time difference between Hawaii and every other state in the US. Hawaii has its own time zone, the Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone, which is 10 hours behind Universal Coordinated Time (UTC-10). This time zone is a few hours behind every time zone in the Continental United States aka The Mainland. Let's cover the differences in detail, starting with California.

TIME DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CALIFORNIA AND HAWAII

The time difference between California and Hawaii changes when California changes from Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time. 

Between the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, basically all Spring, Summer, and early Fall, California is three hours ahead of Hawaii. This means that when it is 3pm in California, it is 12pm (noon) in Hawaii. 

Between the first Sunday in November and the second Sunday in March, basically from mid-Fall to late Winter, California is 2 hours ahead of Hawaii. This means when it is 2pm in California, it is 12pm (noon) in Hawaii. 

TIME DIFFERENCE HAWAII

Here's how it shakes out, for every time zone in the US. The Table below shows you what time it is in every other US time zone when it is 6am in Hawaii, for both Standard Time, and Daylight Saving Time.

So if you're in New York City, or Miami, FL, for example, the time difference between you and Maui is six hours during Daylight Saving Time (from the second Sunday of March to the first Sunday of November), and five hours during Standard Time (from the first Sunday of November to the second Sunday of March) - so when it's noon your time during the summer, it's only 6am in Maui. And in the middle of winter, when it's noon your time, it's only 7am in Maui. 

Now for the thing that a lot of people don't ever get: Is Maui time ahead of, or behind the time in the Mainland US. Think about it with the rotation of the Earth. The sun rises and sets first in the East, then, as the world turns, gradually the sunrise or sunset move from East to West. And Maui is farther West than any location in the Continental US, so it's the last to get the sunrise. So if you're in New York City, it's 9am already by the time the sun rises in Los Angeles, at around 6am. And in Maui it's still dark - so 3am.
Confused? Don't worry, you're not the only one who does not know what time it is - in Hawaii. But try to think about this the next time that you need to call to discuss a Maui car rental, or you're wondering why the email you sent about rental car Maui airport did not get an immediate response - it's possible we are still in bed snoozing while you are already well into your day.
And what about "Maui time?" Maui time is a state of mind where there is no reason to rush, and everything happens at its own pace. Not unrelated to the concept of 'mañana.' There are even bumper stickers that explain it.
