April 7, 2024 - This week's cheapest car rental in Maui for one week is $203.40. This is an off-airport rate, with shuttle service. From the OGG Airport Rentacar Center, it's $292.04.

These rates are for a seven day rental starting Monday, April 8, from Maui's Kahului Airport (OGG), and returning on Monday, April 15. 

These rates include all taxes and fees. They do not include up-sells or optional items like Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI), Collision Damage (CDW), Fuel Service Fee, and so on. They are the lowest advertised rates from travel aggregator site rentalcars.com.  

Rates for different vehicle types, or different dates, or different duration are different. The rates we gave you here are intended to give you a baseline or starting point that you can work with to find a good deal on your Maui car rental.

HOW MUCH DO MAUI'S CAR RENTAL RATES CHANGE THROUGH THE YEAR? 

Maui car rental rates vary throughout the year. We post the lowest advertised rate every Sunday, with a chart showing how Maui's car rental rates have trended over the last few months, since July of 2023. Rates during peak travel periods can be significantly higher than other periods. For this year, the off-airport rate peaked at more than $400/week, more than twice this week's rate, and the peak airport rate was $600/week, also twice this week's rate. These peak rates were for the week of Valentine's Day, February 14. We reported this peak rate in our blog post of February 11, 2024, Maui Car Rental Rates Skyrocket in February 2024.  

WHAT TIME OF YEAR HAS THE CHEAPEST RATES FOR MAUI CAR RENTAL? 

This week's rates are down for the fourth week in a row from a recent peak, and settling in to their off-season (or shoulder season) low. The two shoulder seasons for Maui are mid-April to mid-June, and August through September. The peak season is January through March, with a lower peak from mid-June to the end of July. WERE THIS YEAR'S CAR RENTAL RATES IN MAUI DIFFERENT FROM OTHER YEARS?

Here's a summary of the average cost of renting a car for one week in each of the past nine months, beginning with July 2023.

The rates for this period were affected by the disastrous Lahaina wildfires of August 8, 2023. Following this event, there was a months-long decrease in visitor travel to Maui. The rates for the period from August 2023 to January 2024 are not representative of typical rates for the same months in other years. In particular, the rates for the peak travel season of X-mas to New Year were uncharacteristically low this year. 

HOW MUCH DO YOU SAVE BY BOOKING YOUR MAUI RENTAL CAR FROM AN OFF-AIRPORT LOCATION?

Airport rates are higher than off-airport rates for two reasons. One is they include additional taxes and fees that must be paid when a rental car is picked up at the airport. These airport fees normally amount to about $75/week or just more than $10/day. But that's not the only reason. Maui's rental car companies seem to charge a "convenience premium" for airport rentals. This premium is reflected in the base rate you pay to rent the car. It fluctuates with supply and demand. The higher the demand, the higher the premium. This premium can be $20/day or more, for renting the same car, from the same company, the only difference being an airport location versus an off-airport location. WHAT ABOUT LOCAL MAUI CAR RENTAL COMPANIES?

Not every car rental company in Maui is included in the aggregated data on rentalcars.com. Maui has a home-grown cottage industry of locally owned and operated car rental companies. Their rates are sometimes significantly lower than the aggregator rates, sometimes not so much. For example, in February, the best rate from our rental company, Frank's Friendly Cars (publisher of this blog), was $200/week - our rate was less than half the lowest rate on the aggregator website. But for this week, at $175/week, conventional rates have come down, and our rate is only about $25/week less than the aggregator rate. You would still save some money renting from us, but not as much as you would during peak season. 

HOW TO FIND LOCAL MAUI CAR RENTAL COMPANIES

WHAT'S INCLUDED IN THE PRICE? ARE THERE ANY HIDDEN FEES? 

Beware of companies that advertise misleading rates. For example, one of our competitors is currently advertising a "special rate" of $140/week. But this does not any of the required taxes and fees. The state's Rental Vehicle (RV) tax adds $52/week to this amount, and the General Excise tax (fancy name for sales tax) adds $6.59. So that $140/week rental ends up costing $198.59.
